Arts & Music at St. John Regional Catholic School

St. John Regional Catholic School’s art program offers ceramics, mosaics, glass melting, wood working, drawing, painting, printmaking, art history, and other media. The art program is continually evolving; the art room studio fosters student creativity. Our visual arts curriculum introduces all the elements of art, then builds onto the principles of art throughout the curriculum.

The art program works with other disciplines to incorporate projects related to what the students are working on in other classes. The art program works with the STEM team to provide cross-curricular experiences.

Students have opportunities to self-evaluate and do art analysis with their assignments. Given this opportunity, it allows the individual to expand and enhance their creativity.

Immersing students in a creative process develops their confidence in taking risks and challenges their problem-solving skills. Discussion, art content, sketch book drawing, critical thinking and meta-cognitive skills are taught as students reflect on their work. The visual art department participates in local art shows, and works alongside of local studios and art galleries. The Fine Arts Evening, which is held in the spring, celebrates all the students through art and music. Throughout the year, student art work is put on display for everyone to enjoy.

Band

Students wishing to explore and develop their musical abilities and talents have a wonderful outlet to do so in the St. John Regional Catholic School Band. The SJRCS Band has been in existence for nearly thirty years. The band performs at many school and Archdiocesan functions throughout the year. There are also events outside of the school in which the band participates. Students may begin taking lessons during the school day, once a week, when they are in the fourth grade.

Chorus & Hand Bell Choir

The SJRCS Chorus and the Hand Bell Choir are open to all students in grades 4-8. The ensembles are under the direction of music teacher, Mrs. Peggy Frazier. They meet once a week after school to prepare music for Masses and other school related events. Students perform a variety of music, including both traditional and contemporary hymns. In addition to singing, students also increase their knowledge of music theory.
